Pap Smear

Cancer of the cervix is the second leading cause of death in women in India. Every year 122,000 women are diagnosed and more than 67,000 die of cancer cervix.
Cervical cancer can be easily detected through a screening test called Pap Smear Test. It should be done routinely by all women after 25 years of age every year. It is easily done in a clinic and is not painful.

Liquid base cytology

Liquid-based cytology is another method apart from conventional method (pap smear) for preparing samples for examination in cytopathology. The sample collected is deposited into a small bottle of preservative liquid unlike the pap smear testing.

Puberty problems

As young girls step into adolescence they may face some challenges ranging from precocious puberty i.e getting puberty changes before the age of 8; delayed puberty, PCOD or polycystic ovarian disease, menstrual problems especially pain during menses, or PMS i.epremenstrual syndrome. Along with these changes comes a lot of anxiety and a plethora of questions. And they need someone who is empathetic and knowledgeable to answer their questions because they are already going through a lot at this tender age.
Working with young girls and providing them with right guidance and support has been the most beautiful part of my career as a gynecologist. I have reached out to young girls and their mothers through various forums to ensure they get the required support and guidance.

Menstrual complaints

Pain in menses, prolonged menses, frequent menses, scanty menstruation, heavy periods, irregular periods, not getting periods for more than a month, bleeding or spotting in between periods, passing clots during menses, premenstrual syndrome are some common problems faced by young women. And all of them need a proper diagnosis to identify their underlying cause. I urge women not to ignore these problems and schedule a consultation to ensure their proper treatment and care.

Vaginal discharge

One of the common problems faced by women at some point in time or other in their lives is vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge may be copious, scanty, irritating, foul-smelling or colored or associated with itching. It may indicate an infection and usually needs an examination by the gynecologist.
Maintaining vaginal hygiene is very important for women.
I urge women not take this lightly and get regular check-ups done to maintain their health.
Some infections are sexually transmitted needing treatment for the partner as well. You might need to undergo a few tests to rule out some infections.

Family planning surgeries

When we feel our family is complete, we can opt for a permanent way of birth-control. The permanent method of avoiding pregnancy is tubal ligation also called a family planning operation. Done laparoscopically, it is comfortable for the patient and leads to early mobilization and better cosmesis. Usually, the patients are discharged the same day.
Women can opt for family planning operation along with the Cesarean to avoid another surgery. Since it is a permanent method, I recommend both partners to discuss this before taking a decision. It is important for women to know that this operation does not affect their menstrual cycles or sexual desires in any way.

Menopausal problems

One of the most beautiful moments is giving birth to a new life. And most women are anxious about how they deliver. I believe in keeping this moment natural and beautiful. An open communication between the doctor and the would-be mother and father and sharing full information has helped me make this time beautiful for my patients through normal deliveries. It is natural to be worried about the pain but with proper care and management, the pain can be eased and the journey be made smooth for the mother-to-be.

Cesarean sections

The word “operation” scares almost everyone. And this doubles during pregnancy since two lives are involved. But sometimes, delivery by operation is the safest way for the mother and the child. There are many questions that come to mind like “How much time will it take?, Will the husband be allowed inside?, How soon would the mother recover and what would be the post-operation effects? And many more.
I strongly encourage all parents-to-be to have a candid conversation and open up about all their fears and anxieties. There are a lot of misconceptions about C-sec deliveries. Every patient is different and so course of action has to be customized for everyone. A heart to heart conversation between the doctor and the family ensures a happy mommy and happy baby.
